Pre- Hospital-Tuesday 9/27
My day started out normal, well kind of. I decided since the only thing not marked off of the check off list for the "pre labor" stuff was Nesting. So i woke up with the goal to pretend I had the Nesting need. I found that I could get a couple of things finished, but than i would have to take a nap before i could get anything else done. for example. I could get one load of dishes done, and start a load of laundry, and then have to take a nap. I could sweep the floor and clean the bathroom, than i would have to nap . . . . and that was basically how my day went.
After dinner, i went into the kitchen to sneak a few chocolate chips and I ended up dropping the bag on the floor. Before Kyler could figure out what i had done, I squatted down and attempted to pick up the chocolate chips. All of the sudden i felt a "pop" and my legs were drenched. I ran to the bathroom yelling "Ky! either my bladder just popped or my water did . . . "We then went through the entire process of trying to decided what had actually happened and laughing at the fact that something strange happened while picking up a chocolate chip off of the ground.
We decided it was my water breaking and we started to put our stuff together to go to the hospital. As we were getting things together, I came to a really embarrassing realization . . . .. My other pair of pants (I only have two pairs) were in the washer!! At that point i started to panic, do i put on my night dress (yes, I bought one that look's like my mom's. I know i said i would never do that, but it was the only thing comfy towear to bed while pregnant) or do I put on a skirt with an unmatching T-shirt (one that would let my belly hang out yuck!). As i stood in the bathroom trying to figure out what i was going to do, Kyler calmly walked around the house gathering the items I had not packed yet. I couldn't believe how calm he was!!
Finally, when kyler had the car packed, he came into the bathroom and asked me what i was going to do. this was about 45minutes later, and yes i was still in the bathroom wondering what i was going to do. I finally had him get my my skirt and t-shirt and we walked out the door and got stuck on the patio . . . Ky's sister and her husband were standing back there getting ready to leave. We, meaning me, had to tell them what happened and inform them that we were going to the hospital and hoping that we wouldn't get there and find out i had just peed my pants or something.
And to the hospital we went
The Hospital- 7 pm
When we got to the hospital, i felt really silly. i hadn't had any contractions and was walking just fine up to the labor and delivery floor. I walked up to the window and explained to the nurse that I thought i was in labor. I was expecting her to roll her eyes and tell me to leave, but she started handing me TONS of papers to sign and asking me tons of silly questions. Finally, she let me in to be checked to see if my water had really broken.
I changed into the silly gown (which wasn't as silly as my skirt and T-Shirt) they had and sat on the bed and waited for the nurse to come in. She confirmed it was my water breaking and started checking me into the hospital. She hooked me up to the baby heart rate and contraction machine and than checked my blood pressure. She found that I had REALLY high blood pressure and it sent her into a panic. It was 168 over something and she ran to call my doctor. (usually my blood pressure is around 118 ). My Doctor ordered her to use a straight catheter and check my urine for protein to be sure that i didn't have Toxemia. Good news, it turned out all normal, but i would NEVER ever ever EVER suggest ever having to get a catheter! She checked my pulse again and found it was lower than it was, but still concerning.
At that point, they decided to stick me with tons of needles. It took them 5 times to finally get the IV into me! I couldn't believe it! they had to call in the nurse that rarely misses the veins and she missed twice!!! I think other things happened besides the IV, but by that point, i was over whelmed and so i can't remember what happened.
Finally, they decided they were done sticking me and would let me walk around. I made a couple of laps around the floor when the nurse came and told me my doctor wanted my blood pressure checked again. It had gone up and so i was "grounded" to my bed. Who wants to have contractions in bed! I was enjoying walking around and randomly stopping when i had a contraction hit. It was the best way to pass time!
I hadn't made any progress after 2 hours of being at the hospital so they decided to start me on pitocin (pit), the one thing i DID NOT want!!!! I was SO angry and of course just like a "good" care giver does, she reassured me that it would be ok and they NEEDED to give it to me!! After starting the pitocin, she asked if i wanted an epidural. I had planned to do this naturally so of course i refused. she came in every 30 minutes to up the dosage of Pit. At that point, i was tired and SO hungry and SO thirsty!! I was having frequent contractions so i couldn't get sleep, and since i was in labor I was not allowed to eat or drink! how stupid is that! I know its for a good reason (to cover their butts) but when you have to go through all that work, eating and drinking are GOOD THINGS! I don't care if its because of the "just in case" factor, I needed food and they would only give me ice chips! Pretty soon i couldn't handle the pain anymore and i couldn't handle her asking me AGAIN if i wanted to have the epidural, i finally told her i would get one. Amazing thing after getting the epidural, one of my three complaints were met. I could sleep!
The scary thing that ended up happening was that baby's heart rate was doing some funny things. (not sure what, like they would tell me!) and the nurse had to call in some back up to figure out what was going on. they turned off the pit and they put me on oxygen and then finally, they had me rotate to my other side. Alicia's heart rate was under control, but my body was aching from being in the same position for so long. About 3 am, i was 10 cm. When they use pit, they give you an hour to rest and then start the pushing. So i rested for the hour and a crancky pregnant nurse came in and decided she didn't want to help me push, so she walked out and I never saw her again. A new nurse cam in at 5am and she got me ready to start pushing.
For a good portion of the pushing I was on Oxygen to try to keep Alicia's heart rate consistent. By this point, i was was off pit and so my contrations were actually not close together and very irregular. I would push and than wait for five minutes and then push and the wait for 10. That was hard. I just wanted to "push her out, shove her out, way out!" as fast i I could, but no, thats not what happened. Instead the two nurses, kyler, and I sat around and talked about where we were from and getting to know each other. (the epidural worked really well). When they could see Alicias head when i pushed, they pulled out a mirror so i could see what was going on and the progress i was making. I was SHOCKED to see hair! that was not what i was expecting at all! i thought i would have a bald baby!
I pushed for 2.5 hours before my doctor was called in. He got ready to catch the baby and by 8:13 i had a baby girl that was in need of having her embilical cord cut. The doctor looked at Kyler (who was looking a little pale and REALLY uneasy) and instructed kyler to pick up the scissors and cut the cord. It took a little persuading but kyler did it!. the doctor told Kyler that if Bug ever asked him if he cut her cord, that Kyler would be able to say he did it.
My Baby and After her delivery
My first thought when she was placed on my belly was "holy cow she's heavy!!" Most of the new borns i've held are under 7 lbs. But my little girl was 8 lbs and 4 oz!!!
They let me have my baby on my tummy for quite a while before taking her a way to be cleaned up. Each time they came over to me, i would tell them they couldn't have her. I explained that if I saw my doctor stitching me up, i just might pass out.
When they finally took my baby from me, i was not feeling well. Ky later told me i was pale and he was getting really concerned about me. I later learned that i had lost 1/2 liter of blood. After my doctor stitched me up, he had them put me back on pitocin, and they gave me three other types of drugs to try to get me to stop bleeding. One of these drugs had a yucky side effect . . . vomiting and diarrhea And since i had just gotten off the epidural, there was no hope of me getting to the bathroom. What a mess! i felt so gross and i smelt gross and to make things worse, for the 6th time since arriving at the hospital, they put the straight catheter in (they decided that they needed to take it in and out every two hours! not my idea of fun!).
Recovery
After being transported up stairs, i finally got to eat!!! ( my poor swollen body!)
While i was eating, nurses came in to give Alicia her first bath
the next couple of days we stayed at the hospital. We had long nights and we didn't really know what to do. We are getting the hang of it, but its still hard. Thank Goodness for the wonderful grandparents who have come up to help us!
had to put this one up to show my swollen ankles! ugg to swelling!! I thought that would end after i had my baby!!!
